Economies of Scale

• Obviously not all people in Santa Barbara have the opportunity or ability to become
self-sufficient, especially concerning food. For each of the essential needs (food,
water, energy, transportation) there is a different economy of scale. While any one
person may not be able to grow all the food sufficient to meet their individual needs, together in community this would be possible.

• Water on the other hand, is best and most efficiently treated at the point of use. It would be far more economical to install point of use water treatment systems in each family’s residence than the current system of treating the water at a plant
and then allowing it to become contaminated as it makes its journey through miles of pipe to the individual tap.

• We can take advantage of the earth’s ability to use the top 8”-10” of soil, rich in bacteria, to clean and remediate blackwater, rather than the current system of funneling sewage to a central system and using harsh chemicals to partially treat it and then dumping it into the ocean.»
