Background
Earth First Construction, a California educational non-profit corporation, was conceived in 1992, the same year its founder, Margaret Carswell was called to steward the land known as 845 Sea Ranch Drive in Santa Barbara. The first green building project of EFC was the design and construction of Margaret’s home.
1992 also marked the beginning of a protracted divorce which has yet to be resolved. The stress
involved in simultaneously raising three young children, building a home and fighting a divorce was overwhelming. Margaret’s immune system gave out and she was diagnosed with leukemia in 2004.
She began researching healing and what it means to be healthy, just as she had researched deep ecology and green building years earlier. Out of this was born the Self-Healing Education Center and the Community Building Center (because individual good health is a community affair), both adjuncts of EFC.
2008 brought the global financial crisis and from this came the recognition that for things to change, we must build a new system that makes the old one obsolete. In order to reach this realization one must understand the changing nature of money.»
